Christmas Holiday Binges - Let's Get Our Programme On Track..

So like most of us you've had a pig out on Christmas day, not only that but leading up to Christmas day has been a ton of parties you've been attending, all with really rich party food. It's been hard to resist let's face it.

A few more days of mass eating left. Boxing day starts with leftover turkey and leftover Christmas food. For some reason we seem to go overboard for this one day of the year!

Lots of cakes, cheeses, wines, special treats. I could go on and on!

So once this festive period is out of the way, we need to start getting back on track to get into our summer bodies.

Too soon?

Not likely, is my response.

Keep on the Body by Vi program with one shake day at least it'll keep your weight stable throughout this festive season. When you're ready to go full steam ahead,  just up the pace and do two shakes a day with 3 to 4 trips to the gym per week.

My ninety-day challenge is near the end, to achieve a 20 mile bike ride.  I've been doing mainly indoor exercises because I havent felt particularly movitated with the british weather..

Here are some great indoor exercises to keep you on top of your challenge, fun to keep in with the season..

Enjoy the season!

My 90 Day Challenge To Complete A 20 Mile Bike Ride

Day 1
You can follow my challenge on my timeline here: https://challenge.com/timeline/2936173

I am using the new Transformation Kit click here for more info. It has additional products which will not only help me get fitter, but also to lose weight and to aid with snacking and hunger.

It's nearly Christmas and most of us will want to be thinking about Christmas parties and the little black dress.

Normally around this time of the year I start a weight loss campaign to lose at least 7lbs.  Why?
Because I know with all the good food that comes with the holidays I am bound to overeat, and if I have lost the weight I am just putting it back on so that I dont need to go into crazy diet mode come the new year.

So who is up for the challenge with me?

Body By Vi UK Weightloss testimonials

This is a short video I took at our last Local Success Training in London in early September.

Vi is changing the health and lives of people all over the UK. I am so proud to be able to say that I am helping friends and family to change their health and to pro long their lives.

It has been shown that being over 10lbs in weight can have serious consequences on your health. So many of us are more than 10lbs overweight, some choose to do something about it, others just 'live' with it!

It is only when health and limbs begin to fail, that we look to changing our lifestyle and ultimately our diet.  It doesnt have to be this way.  Taking care of your 'younger self' will help to keep your older self more 'in shape' and in better health.

Hope you enjoy the testimonials here some are not only to do with weightloss, but also improving health due to the weight loss.

Diabetes cases in Britain hit three million

Diabetes cases in Britain hit three million

Diabetes is on the increase especially amongst children.  With todays fast food outlets, processed foods, high in fat, salt and sugars are mainly to blame.

The sad thing is that through simply eating fresh fruits and vegetables and by watching what you are eating, reducing the fat content and amount of salt, and increasing the amount of exercise can help to control diabetes.

Diabetes is something that does concern me, as my mother was diagnosed with this in her early 70's.  Coming from a West Indian background, the foods that we eat are rich in starches which turn to sugar if you do not use the energy or calories up.   Learning how to combine foods and not eat the wrong food types together has helped in controlling diabetes in my mother's case.

My mother was a diabetic diagnosed in her 70's, today at 86, her GP is considering taking her off her medication as her diabetes has been controlled through diet and education of what to eat, what not to eat and swapping bad foods for good food equivalents.

If you are overweight and have Diabetes, then the Vi Shake is great to use to help you to lose weight and stabilise your blood sugar as it is diabetic friendly.  Eating regularly, but healthily will help to reduce weight along with gentle exercise such as walking or riding.

Visalus UK is intent on fighting obesity across the globe, and their product is diabetic friendly, lactose free and gluten free.

This is an article I found interesting in the METRO last week.  Diabetes is also known as the silent killer, as many people do not even know they have it.

The number of Britons suffering from diabetes has soared by a third in six years to 3million, costing the NHS £764million in prescriptions.

It is estimated another 850,000 remain undiagnosed – with 90 per cent suffering from Type 2 diabetes, linked to unhealthy lifestyles.

Doctors authorised 42.5million items costing £764.1million in the last financial year in England, compared with £513.9million in 2005-06.

Body by Vi - After workout shake!

Really important that you feel the body before and after your workout.

Before a workout you can have a carb shake, just mix your visalus shake mix with fruit juice instead of milk, other milk alternatives. This will give you energy that you need to carry out your workout.

Make sure you hydrate properly during your workout and drink lots of water, small sips.

Once your workout is complete, you should have a protein based meal within 30 minutes.  Why 30 minutes, well your muscles that you have been working out need protein to regenerate and guess what, if you don't get protein in your body quickly then your muscles begin to eat themselves, which really does defeat the purpose of you going to the gym and working out in the first place.

Remember muscle burns fat effectively, so if you do not build lean muscle, then your body will find it difficult to burn fat.

Muscle is also heavier, so when you weigh yourself, don't be alarmed if you actually do not see to be losing weight, if you are losing inches, then your programme is working fine, it just means you are gaining lean muscle.

Gaining lean muscle is important as we get older.  When our bodies age, our muscles tend to 'waste' away, and this can again cause man health issues, so ensuring that you tone and build lean muscles is equally as important as losing weight.

For some great recipes visit www.recipes.vi.com or http://thinkoutsidetheblender.com/

Good luck on entering project 10 and wishing you success on the challenge!

Day 1 of my NEW 90 Day Challenge - To Lose 10% Body Fat

I started out on my 2nd 90 day challenge with Vi last weekend.  After completing my first 90 day challenge and losing 27lbs using the boost kit.  I replaced 2 meals a day with a nutritious vi shake mix and Nutra Cookies for my naughty treats that were really good healthy treats, if you know what I mean!

I was so impressed with myself at not 'picking' at food just for the sake of it, and also reduced eating 'cheese' which by the way is my absolute favourite food.

I didn't want to get back into old habits and wanted to do something more to improve my health and physique.

So I embarked on a challenge to lose 10% of my body fat which incidently is at 36.1%.  So let us see over the next 80 odd days whether I can reduce and tone / build lean muscle as part of my 90 day challenge with Vi UK.

What this challenge has taught me is that you dont need to start a program at the beginning of a year... that is when most people decide they want to lose weight, and also not many see it through beyond a few weeks.

Being on the 90 day challenge has englightened me, as you are encouraged to put your challenge 'out there' on the big wide web, then really you are making yourself accountable to thousands and thousands of people.

Join me on my next 90 day challenge www.90days2change.myvi.net

My results are below :)

Good luck on entering project 10 and wishing you success on the challenge!

My 90 Day Challenge Results

Day 90 of my first Body by Vi weightloss challenge. To lose 27lbs in 90 days. I am proud to say I achieved this - see my video below. I used the boost kit which allowed me to have two shakes per day, replacing two meals of my choice, (breakfast & Lunch) however sometimes I over extended lunch when I was out at meetings so had a shake for dinner instead. The boost kit also comes with Nutra cookies which also helped in the evenings when I had a sugar crave. As they are high in protein, this curbed my hunger till I got home and had dinner. I cheated a few times and ate out at restuarants, but the weight still came off, so I feel comfortable I can take this program forward as part of my lifestyle and regime. If you are overweight, or want to gain weight, then consider joining a challenge, share your results and journey with others, there is lots of support, guidance and advice. Enjoy the video below.

Good luck on entering project 10 and wishing you success on the challenge!

Todd Reynolds Lost Over 345 Pounds on The Body by Vi Challenge

****TAKEN FROM THE VISALUS BLOG****

Posted by Jeff Chenoweth June 22, 2013
Today we have an incredibly inspiring success story to share with you. Todd Reynolds lived a life where he was confined to a using a walker/cane and at times even a wheelchair. It got to the point where he was over 600 pounds and couldn’t fit into the car. A lot has changed since 2011 for him- Todd Reynolds lost over 345 pounds on the Body by Vi Challenge.
Below is Todd’s miraculous story, in his own words.
“Prior to December 31, 2011, my life was very different than it is now. I weighed over 600 pounds and couldn’t leave my home. I had to use a walker or a cane, sometimes even a wheelchair just to get around. I had to have assistance to help me with almost everything- even simple tasks. I was on many medications to survive and could not fit into a car, let alone drive one.
I am eternally grateful to my hair stylist for introducing me to The Challenge. To be honest, I wasn’t sure it would work at first. After the first week I lost nine pounds and felt like this could really be something special- something that could change my life.
I have given The Challenge 100% of my effort for the past 17 months and have now lost over 345 lbs. My weight went from over 600 pounds all the way down to 279 pounds.
I am truly convinced that ViSalus saved my life and know it helped lift up my spirits enough to make me want to live again. My life has been transformed for the better and I couldn’t be happier or more thankful.
At this point, my mission is to share my story and help others reach their goals as I have. Prior to joining The Challenge, my doctor told me that if I didn’t join a weight loss program and shed significant weight, I was going to die. I definitely made the right chose.
There is no price tag for what ViSalus has done for me and how it has completely rejuvenated my life.
When I was invited to speak in front of over 10,00 Promoters in Los Angeles at National Success Training this past March, I was humbled to say the least. At the event I had the opportunity to share my story and teach others about “The Face of Obesity” with Blake Mallen.
Speaking to thousands of people about my story and motivating them to continue their pursuit of Life, Health and Prosperity with Blake was an incredible experience.
While I have made significant progress, I am still on my path to becoming the best version of myself that I can possibly be. With the tools and support that ViSalus offers, my next goal that I aim to achieve through The Challenge is my ultimate dream- becoming a Body by Vi Male Champion!”
Congratulations Todd, you are truly an inspiration to all! We are excited to see you continue working towards bettering your life through The Challenge and are so proud to have you as a fellow ViSalian!

Body By Vi-Shape Shake from ViSalus Protein Comparison for Building Muscle

The core of the Body By Vi Challenge is the Vi-Shape Nutritional Shake Mix. This Article explains how the Vi-Shape Shake measures up to other protein containing shakes on the market.

By Audrey Sommerfeld  Head of Nutrition, SVP Marketing ViSalus Sciences

Vi-Shape shake is not just for weight management. It is for nutrition, body building, and for health.

The shake when mixed with non-fat milk or soy milk delivers 20-25 grams of protein, which is the amount nutritionists recommend we get in each meal.

Now body builders claim they often need more, because they are trying to build lean muscle. This may not be true, as not all proteins are created equal.

This is the key reason we don't put how many grams of protein on our shake and tout it like many store brands do. I say this because some brands pump up the amount of grams of protein by adding gelatin (great for skin/hair/nails, but not lean muscle). Some use dehydrated milk powder, some just whey. Those also are ok, but not the latest in science.

We use a combination of proteins because they act differently in the body. The soy is used because of it's heart health benefits.

Adequate consumption of soy in the diet can help the body lower c-reactive proteins, an indicator of inflammation and possibly heart disease. Soy is also easily digestible, and a complete protein.

Our soy is unique in that we use a non-GMO Soy (not genetically modified), and was specially processed to remove the isoflavones that can impact estrogen. While those isoflavones may be beneficial, we know that women with fibroids, muscle builders, and others worry about the impact of estrogen. Non-GMO soy is about 45% more expensive than regular soy, but we chose to use it because of the concerns some people have about soy.

We use a whey concentrate for fast acting hunger control. Then we use a unique whey hydrolysate, which is the latest technology and is very expensive. It helps retain lean muscle, and is very highly absorbed. While some wheys can be absorbed about 80%, whey hydrolysate is much higher. It is a pure, clean, and concentrated protein. Combine that with the Aminogen®, and we have more ingredients to help build, and maintain lean muscle while promoting fast loss.

So the 3 types of proteins help support heart health, bone health, muscle health, digestive health, and can help curb hunger quickly, and last too!

For athletes, it is recommended that they get protein into their body within 30 minutes after completing a workout. Protein will help the muscles repair themselves, and quicker. This is why Vi-Shape shake was designed to mix in water, and still taste great, and why we have it in individual serving packets. People can take the packet to the gym, and mix it in water and get it into their bodies quickly. The key points of difference are the quality of the proteins that we use (absorbability) as well as the fact that we added Aminogen®.
Aminogen® is a patented, and clinically tested ingredient that has been shown to help the body better utilize the protein. This way, you get more nutrition into the body and the muscle. We are also lower sodium than most brands (have not found one yet lower than us).

Protein Intake for Building Muscle

A few bodybuilding and weight training coaches recommend protein intakes of 40 percent of energy; for example 40% protein, 40% carbohydrate; 20% fat. Let’s take a look at this.

In the 4000 calorie diet of our 100 kilogram bodybuilder, 40% protein would be 1600 calories, equivalent to 400 grams of protein at 4 calories per gram. That's 4 grams/protein/kilogram body weight/day; over four times the RDI and twice what's scientifically defensible. Not good.

Fast and Slow Proteins

How quickly amino acids get transported to blood and how quickly they then get assimilated into muscle and other tissue for repair and rebuilding is the basis of this idea. According to some enthusiasts, fast proteins such as whey are superior to slow proteins like casein. Both are derivatives of milk products. Here are some values (Bilsborough 2006):

  • Egg protein 1.3 grams/hour
  • Casein isolate – 6.1 grams/hour
  • Whey isolate – 8-10 grams/hour

There's not much evidence that these variations make a difference to muscle building over the longer term, although whey has shown some advantage in short-term studies.

Yet the other useful information that can be gleaned from the numbers above is that with an average protein absorption of, say, 7 grams/hour, a theoretical absorption is limited to around 168 grams each day (24×7). If accurate, it makes the 400 gram/day protein diets look entirely unnecessary at best.

Very high-protein diets may not be safe over time for the following reasons:
  • High levels of nitrogen and amino acids can be toxic.
  • High-protein diets are not safe for those people suffering from chronic kidney disease. Up to 20 percent of the population may be undiagnosed.

Protein and Strength Athletes:

While endurance athletes are easy to convince of the need for a high carbohydrate, low fat diet, strength athletes are a bit harder to convince of the need for adequate carbs and moderate protein. Strength athletes have long adhered to high protein diets in order to build muscle. This idea of high protein = more muscle is a bit overstated.

According to the research of sports nutritionists, strength athletes require high carbohydrate and adequate glycogen stored in the muscle. They point out that all high intensity, powerful muscle contractions (such as weight lifting) are fueled with carbohydrate. Neither fat nor protein can be oxidized rapidly enough to meet the demands of high-intensity exercise. Adequate dietary carbohydrate must be consumed on a daily basis to restore glycogen levels.

In fact, research shows that high protein/high fat diets can hurt performance. An inadequate amount of carbohydrate in the diet can result in:
  • Reduced muscle glycogen stores in the muscle and liver
  • Decreased endurance
  • Decreased maximal effort
  • Decreased serum glucose levels
  • Increased risk of hypoglycemia

High protein/high fat diets can also have a negative overall impact on health, including the following:
  • Increased risk of certain cancers
  • Increased calcium excretion and increased risk of osteoporosis
  • Reduced intake of Vitamins, minerals, fiber and phytochemicals

But Don't Strength Athletes Need More Protein To Build Muscle?

Research hasn't shown this. In fact most strength athletes get far more protein than is necessary to promote muscle synthesis.

The current protein recommendations for optimal muscle building in a strength athlete is 1.6 – 1.7 gm protein per kg of body weight.

For a athlete weighing 90 kg (200 pounds) that is a total of 145 – 154 grams of protein a day [about 3 small chicken breasts]. There is no scientific evidence that more than 2.0 grams of protein per kg of body weight has any additional benefit in muscle strength or size.

So What Should an Athlete Eat?

The recommendations of sports nutritionists continues to show performance enhancing benefits. These general guidelines are:
  • 12-15% of daily calories from protein.
  •  25-30% of daily calories from fat.
  • 55-65% of daily calories from carbohydrates

  • An athlete’s nutrition plan should be individualized to meet the needs of training and competition.
  •  Carbohydrates are the primary fuel for intense muscular efforts, and should be the cornerstone of an athlete’s diet, regardless of the sport they play.
