6 Myths Uncovered About Exercise

Weight season is still here! And a lot of us still have a struggle with doing the right amount of exercise per day, if any at all!

We all agree that exercise is good for you mentally and physically. But the question is How much?

And the question of whether too much exercise actually damages the physical body or not is another blog post.

So here goes, 12 myths  uncovered about exercise:

1.  An hour in the gym gives you a good workout!
An hour is in fact too long. Your muscles get tired after the first 20 minutes therefore being in the gym any longer than that has no further adverse affect.  You are better of splitting out your sessions into 3 x 10 minutes or 2 x 20 minute workouts spread out during the day.

2. Exercise is good for you!
Exercise in a moderate amount is good for you, it is better to do some sort of exercise on a daily basis moderately for 10 to 15- 20 minutes rather than doing one big burst every now and then which actually does more damage to your health

3. Exercise is not good for people with joint problems.
In fact this is the opposite. Light exercise such as walking, stretching, yoga, Pilates can help with reducing weight and also help to keep the body supple and improve the joints

4. People who are overweight should not do exercise.
In fact people who are overweight are the ones who need to do some sort of exercise.  Start of with a gentle walk, pace yourself and only do what you feel you can do, then as the weight comes down, you can push yourself a bit more.  Weight strengthening is also good for helping you to burn fat effectively, as this builds muscles and muscle burns fat.

5. Stretching before workout out is crucial to preventing injury
Fact: Stretching after a workout can be beneficial, but stretching before a workout actually doesn't increase your range of motion. In fact, some studies suggest that stretching destabilize muscles, making them less prepared for strenuous exercise, especially if you're doing something like weight-lifting. Instead, do a warm-up, which gets your blood pumping.

6. Lifting Weights will make you look bulky!
Fact: If you've been avoiding the free weights for fear of becoming the Incredible Hulk, no need to flee anymore.
When it comes to increasing muscle size, testosterone is key. Men have 20 to 30 times the more testosterone than women, which is why they can bulk up so noticeably. But for you to reach Arnold Schwarzenegger proportions would require you to do far more weight-lifting than the average woman, plus have some sort of hormone imbalance (either genetic or synthetically induced, as with steroids).
Using weight will help you lose weight faster and keep it off in the long run," notes Jeffrey Janot, PhD, an assistant professor of exercise physiology at South Dakota State University in Brookings. If you also do cardio, it'll help you retain muscle as you drop fat, as well as prevent your metabolism from slowing. So don't focus all your efforts on the elliptical machine — some bicep curls could actually help you reach your ultimate goal.

The Top 10 Workout Songs of 2014

Fort Wayne, IN – December 27, 2014 – With few exceptions, workout songs can be distinguished by two main attributes: popularity and speed. If a song has cracked the Top 40 chart and has a tempo above 125 beats per minute (BPM), there's a good chance you'll hear it in the gym.

In this look back at 2014, you'll find lots of songs that meet the criteria above--along with a few outliers. Starting with the big winners, Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" was the most popular workout song of the year. (Not coincidentally, it's also the fastest song in the bunch below.)

Calvin Harris is notable for being the only artist to make the top 10 twice. Plus, Maroon 5 and Nico & Vinz both had songs so catchy that folks didn't mind their slower tempos.

Rounding out the list, there are remixes of rock tracks from OneRepublic and American Authors, a song from Meghan Trainor that proved even more popular in the gym than her breakthrough hit "All About that Bass," and a soaring, club track that pits Cash Cash & Bebe Rexha against dance titans The Chainsmokers.

On the whole, the list makes for an easy way to reflect on the year that's passed, get acquainted with any songs you might have missed, and prep the perfect mix to kick off your first workout of 2015.

Here's the full list, according to votes placed on Run Hundred--the web's most heavily-trafficked workout music blog.

Cash Cash & Bebe Rexha - Take Me Home (Chainsmokers Remix Radio Edit) - 129 BPM

OneRepublic - Love Runs Out (Grabbitz Remix) - 124 BPM

Ariana Grande & Zedd - Break Free - 130 BPM

Maroon 5 - Maps - 120 BPM

Calvin Harris - Summer - 128 BPM

American Authors - Best Day of My Life (Gazzo Remix) - 125 BPM

Calvin Harris & John Newman - Blame - 128 BPM

Nico & Vinz - Am I Wrong - 121 BPM

Meghan Trainor - Lips Are Movin - 138 BPM

Taylor Swift - Shake It Off - 160 BPM

Exercise and a Healthy Diet Can Increase Your Life

It's official!

Exercising can improve your health and increase your life. So what?
It's nothing new.
We all know the benefits of exercising and eating healthy but The reality is how many of us do something about it.

Sadly, it is not until something drastic happens in our lives like a health scare that we then look at doing something about it.

In this article by Jonathan Myers he mentions the risks and issues of being sedentary  and the adverse effect it has on your health.

**Over the past 4 decades, numerous scientific reports have examined the relationships between physical activity, physical fitness, and cardiovascular health. Expert panels, convened by organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the American Heart Association (AHA),1–3 along with the 1996 US Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health,4 reinforced scientific evidence linking regular physical activity to various measures of cardiovascular health. The prevailing view in these reports is that more active or fit individuals tend to develop less coronary heart disease (CHD) than their sedentary counterparts. If CHD develops in active or fit individuals, it occurs at a later age and tends to be less severe.

As many as 250 000 deaths per year in the United States are attributable to a lack of regular physical activity.

In addition, studies that followed large groups of individuals for many years have documented the protective effects of physical activity for a number of noncardiovascular chronic diseases, such as non–insulin-dependent diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, and colon cancer.4 In contrast, we see a higher rate of cardiovascular events and a higher death rate in those individuals with low levels of physical fitness.1,4 Even midlife increases in physical activity, through change in occupation or recreational activities, are associated with a decrease in mortality.5 Despite this evidence, however, the vast majority of adults in the United States remains effectively sedentary;

More on the article
** Exercise and Cardiovascular Health. Jonathan Myers, PhD http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/107/1/e2.full

Risks of being sedentary

The article goes on to say there are five major risks of been sedentary which  obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, risk of strokes, and coronary disease are part of.

Therefore exercising and lowering your weight can reduce the risk of all of the above.

I guess another offshoot of being overweight is the fact that mobility is very restricted and sometimes joints are problematic.

Benefits of Exercise

Exercise can improve your mental health, If you're feeling stressed out, or have a few things on your mind, exercise can be very rewarding and relaxing and even help to give mental clarity.

Cardio exercise particularly helps to reduce the risk of strokes, heart attacks, coronary disease. It is true that exercising does help to lower blood pressure, hard to believe when we are running and are Red in the face and your  heart is pumping away but the heart is just a muscle like the rest in our body and it needs exercise also.

The obvious one, exercising can help you shed pounds and improve your muscle tone.

Eating Healthy

If you want to look good and feel good, then eating good is also just as important.

It is far too easy to revert to processed food, quick on the go food that has way too much salt, sugar, saturated fat.  The way in which we live our lives today its all fast, instant, just like technology we expect things instantly.

Increase the amount of fresh vegetables and fruit, along with seeds, fibre and fish, white meat, pulses in your diet.

Remove processed food, fried food, bread, and cakes in the first instance and then look at removing other things later on like dairy.

Which is why using a meal replacement is great, because you don't have to worry about calories, content or what's in it.  You can add fruits and vegetables to your shake and just add the vishape meal replacement mix in and you are good to go.

Ladies only Gym !

I was delighted  when I was invited to attend the opening of a local ladies gym called Energie near to where I live.

The owner Marcus Earnshaw an ex PE Teacher decided to change his career and move into the gym industry.  He felt that working with and helping women would be highly rewarding as many women who are overweight and of a 'certain age group' would not normally go to the gym, so having a ladies only gym to cater for their needs was a gap in the market that needed addressing.

The workout areas are nice and fresh, themed out in white and crimson.  The gym is on two floors. The ground floor with two circuit rooms:

The 30-minute Easyline circuit. The equipment is that simple to use, you can get started from day one, even if you've never exercised before. That's because the hydraulic equipment self-adjusts; the harder you push the harder the exercise, the slower you push the slower you exercise - allowing you to workout at a pace comfortable for you.
Combining gentle aerobic activity and muscle toning, you'll soon notice stunning results:

Weight loss.
Inch loss.
Increased muscle tone.
Increased energy levels.
Improved sleep.
Boosted metabolism.
Increased endorphin levels - leaving you feeling great.

The 30-minute Motorised circuit.

Designed for non-exercisers, the gentle, motorised equipment does all the hard work for you, making it easy for ladies in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond to achieve exceptional results:

Inch loss.
Increased energy.
Increased mobility.
Reduced pain levels (including arthritic pain and back pain).
Slowing down of the ageing process.
Improved posture.
Improved sleep.

The second floor had a small workout studio for classes, and a changing area, shower rooms and a chillout room.

Then there is the Empower Programme.
During your first 6 weeks you will meet once a week with a member of staff to discuss your fitness and weight loss goals and to track your progress through these first 6 weeks and beyond.
Within the 6 weeks you will be taught how to:
  •  exercise to deliver optimum results.
  •  maintain a healthy balanced diet.
  • Why a healthy mindset is crucial to achieving your health and fitness goals.
  •  Creating fun and balance through fun and relaxation, which is why you want to be healthy in the first place so you have the energy, health and vitality to do the things you love with the people you love.
By following this step by step programme you can transform your health and fitness and make rapid advances towards your fitness and weight loss goals.

If you are interested in joining the Energie Gym's for ladies you can call Hannah Earnshaw who is the sales lead their contact number is 01923 750336

I was invited by Marcus to come along one evening to demonstrate the Body By Vi programme which he said looked interesting and that members may find useful.  So watch this space as I report back in the next week or so the outcome of my gym challenge party.

Good luck on entering project 10 and wishing you success on the challenge!

Workouts to Boost Metabolism and Tone

Even on a weight loss program you still need to do some form of exercise.

Walking is a really good as this is low impact on your joints.

Start off with something that is less strenuous, one you can manage. As your fitness levels improve then you can get a bit bolder.

It is recommended to perform 30 minutes of exercise at least 3 to 4 times a week. You can do this in many ways, including breaking down the number of minutes that you exercise daily.

Exercise is essential as part of improving your health, there are s number of benefits; it improves your circulation, and your blood flow, reduces your cholesterol and body fat, Increases flexibility of the joints, And helps with stress.

It is always advisable to check with your doctor before you start any exerciseregime  particularly if you have not exercised for a while, or you are overweight.

And it doesn't have to be about going to the gym. House work, gardening, cleaning the car, taking the family pet for a walk all constitutes exercise.

Here is a seven minute workout program which I do as a warm up.

I normally have a timer running in the background. If you have a smart phone you can normally find an app or something built-in.

Really important to ensure that you warm up and warm down properly, To reduce injury.

What's your favourite form of exercise leave a comment in the box below .

A Sense of Achievement - What's Your Challenge?

Taking part in the London Triathalon in 2007 was one of the pinnacles of my life. It was a fantastic achievement to have completed this marvellous event.

Here I am with my three team members, Jenny adn Emma. We were part of a team called the Herbalupers. Jenny came on board with less that 8 weeks to go, she had previously just recovered from Pleurasy apologies if I have spelt that incorrectly, and she agreed to be our swimmer! what a brave girl. She completed the 1500m swim with ease....
Emma volunteered to be the 5k runner, and what a fantastic run that was.
Me, well I ended up doing the 20k bike ride..... nearly killed me! But was such a good laugh and it was lovely that everyone cheered each other on.

For me, this was a life time achievement. I had reached my forties, and hadn't competed in any competitions for the last 6 years. I used to play in a Netball league but got injured. My ligament in my knee gave out, so jogging and jumping were a no no for me. Prior to my knee injury I loved sports, and was always playing either badminton, Netball, Football or going to the gym. The thought of having to get back into training to compete in this Triathalon was a no brainer really, I wanted to improve my fitness but also to prove that I CAN DO THIS if i put my mind to it!

It took a lot of discipline, effort and focus to prepare ourselves for this event. Even your diet had to be focussed and you had to be disciplined enough to ensure you ate the right mix of food groups.

Preparing yourself physically and mentally was a challenge. But like all challenges we face, you deal with them one at a time. I had tolog a daily schedule of what I was going to physically achieve for that day and STICK to it! When I was out there preparing for my cycle race, I would listen to my ipod which i had loaded up a bunch of motivational audio books, as well as some really great inspirational music to keep me going the distance. This made the time go quickly and enjoyably...

I raised nearly £2,000 for charity by taking part in this event alone, so it made it all worthwhile for me, and do you know, I went on to compete again in the following year's Triathalon, in fact we all did, but in different teams..... It was fantastic!

This is one less achievement I can tick off on my list of things I have done before I leave this wonderful earth....

What have you done, that made you feel a great sense of achievement in your life? Go ahead and leave a comment for me....
