Lose Weight and Have Fun Doing It!

Losing weight can be fun!

Try getting together with a bunch of friends and help cheer each other on. Or join us on the Challenge....

I try to make it a competition on who can find the tastiest low calorie menu / meal for the week. It gets even better, when you can find low calorie deserts and cakes which are home made and you know all the ingredients that you personally put in them are healthy and low fat!

Going back to basics, cooking food from fresh produce makes dieting interesting and fun and not to mention healthy too!  I recently did a 10 day detox many of you have since followed and completed this too, and I found it fun buying all these vegetables I would not normally buy and making a meal out of the various combinations.

You can control what you put in your meals, how you cook your meals and the portion size, all  of which are important to successful weight management.  Of course the fun begins when you invite friends around for a 'healthy four course meal', all freshly cooked by yourself. Who would imagine losing weight and cooking delicious food all in the same sentence!

Exercising is also made easier when you have friends to do things with, to goad you along and to encourage you when you feel like you don't want to get out there in the cold, wind or rain! Come check out our Challenge Groups, which are designed to help provide support for those of you on the 90 day challenge.
You may also want to look at taking up activities you would not normally do, like line dancing, salsa or badminton something where you can have fun with others while building new friendships and support networks.

Don't get into the trap of weighing yourself too often. I would say once every two weeks is adequate enough, more importantly is measuring the inches you lose as this is a good indication of fat loss.  After all, that is why you are losing weight in the first place.

Have fun losing weight don't make it a chore and watch it all drop off!  After all you are now undertaking a massive lifestyle change, one that will stay with you long term.

If you want to join us on our next 90 day challenge click here and fill in the form for more info.

If you liked my post feel free to share this by email or twitter or facebook

I would love to hear your techniques on keeping yourself on track, post them in my comments box below…

Obesity in Adults

If you are obese or overweight, you have an increased risk of developing various health problems. Even a modest amount of weight loss can help to reduce your increased health risks. The best chance of losing weight and keeping the weight off, is to be committed to a change in lifestyle. This includes eating a healthy diet and doing some regular physical activity. See also separate leaflet called Obesity and Overweight in Children.
If you are obese or overweight, this means that you are carrying excess body fat. Being overweight or obese is not just about how you look. Over time, it means that you have an increased risk of developing various health problems. As an adult, you can find out whether you are overweight or obese and whether your health may be at risk, by calculating your body mass index (BMI) and measuring your waist circumference.

Body mass index (BMI)

People are different heights and builds, so just weighing yourself cannot be used to decide if your weight is healthy. BMI is used by healthcare professionals to assess if someone's weight is putting their health at risk. It is a measure of your weight related to your height.
To calculate your BMI, you divide your weight (in kilograms) by the square of your height (in metres). So, for example, if you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 metres tall, your BMI is 70/(1.75 x 1.75), which is 22.9.
If you do not have scales at home, your practice nurse can measure your height, weigh you and calculate your BMI or try out our BMI calculator.
The table below shows how to interpret your BMI. In general, the more your BMI is over 25, the more overweight or obese you are and the greater the risk to your health.
BMIClassed AsHealth Risk
Less than 18.5UnderweightSome health risk
18.5 to 24.9IdealNormal
25 to 29.9OverweightModerate health risk
30 to 39.9ObeseHigh health risk
40 and overVery obeseVery high health risk
On the whole, BMI is a good estimate of how much of your body is made up of fat. However, BMI may be less accurate in very muscular people. This is because muscle weighs heavier than fat. So, someone who is very muscular may have a relatively high BMI due to the weight of their muscle bulk but actually have a proportionally low and healthy amount of body fat.

Waist circumference

If you are overweight, measuring your waist circumference can also give some information about your risk of developing health problems (particularly coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes). If two overweight or obese people have the same BMI, the person with a bigger waist circumference will be at a greater risk of developing health problems due to their weight. This is because it is not just whether you are carrying excess fat but where you are carrying it. The risks to your health are greater if you mainly carry a lot of extra fat around your waist ('apple-shaped'), rather than mainly on your hips and thighs ('pear-shaped').
The easiest way to measure your waist circumference is to place the tape measure around your waist at belly button level.
As a rule for a man:
  • If you have a waist measurement of 94 cm or above, the risk to your health is increased.
  • If you have a waist measurement of 102 cm or above, the risk is even higher.
As a rule for a woman:
  • If you have a waist measurement of 80 cm or above, the risk to your health is increased.
  • If you have a waist measurement of 88 cm or above, the risk is even higher.
Note: for people from Asian backgrounds, the increased health risks may start at a lower waist circumference. Your doctor or practice nurse can advise.
If you are overweight or obese, from day to day you may:
  • Feel tired and lacking in energy.
  • Experience breathing problems (for example, shortness of breath when moving around, or not being able to cope with sudden bursts of physical activity like running across the road).
  • Feel that you sweat a lot compared with other people.
  • Develop skin irritation.
  • Have difficulty sleeping.
  • Get complaints from your partner that you snore.
  • Experience back and joint pains which can affect your mobility.
You may also have an increased risk of developing:
Many people can also develop psychological problems because of being overweight or obese. For example: low self-esteem; poor self-image (not liking how you look); low confidence; feelings of isolation. These feelings may affect your relationships with family members and friends and, if they become severe, may lead to depression.
Being obese (having a BMI >30) can also affect your overall life expectancy: you are more likely to die at a younger age. An analysis in 2009 of almost one million people from around the world showed that if you have a BMI between 30 and 35, you are likely to die 2-4 years earlier than average. If your BMI is between 40 to 45, you are likely to die 8-10 years earlier than average.
Another analysis showed that if you are a woman who is obese at the age of 40, you are likely to die 7.1 years earlier than average. If you are a man who is obese at the age of 40, you are likely to die 5.8 years earlier than average. If you smoke as well, your life expectancy is reduced even further.

Ladies only Gym !

I was delighted  when I was invited to attend the opening of a local ladies gym called Energie near to where I live.

The owner Marcus Earnshaw an ex PE Teacher decided to change his career and move into the gym industry.  He felt that working with and helping women would be highly rewarding as many women who are overweight and of a 'certain age group' would not normally go to the gym, so having a ladies only gym to cater for their needs was a gap in the market that needed addressing.

The workout areas are nice and fresh, themed out in white and crimson.  The gym is on two floors. The ground floor with two circuit rooms:

The 30-minute Easyline circuit. The equipment is that simple to use, you can get started from day one, even if you've never exercised before. That's because the hydraulic equipment self-adjusts; the harder you push the harder the exercise, the slower you push the slower you exercise - allowing you to workout at a pace comfortable for you.
Combining gentle aerobic activity and muscle toning, you'll soon notice stunning results:

Weight loss.
Inch loss.
Increased muscle tone.
Increased energy levels.
Improved sleep.
Boosted metabolism.
Increased endorphin levels - leaving you feeling great.

The 30-minute Motorised circuit.

Designed for non-exercisers, the gentle, motorised equipment does all the hard work for you, making it easy for ladies in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond to achieve exceptional results:

Inch loss.
Increased energy.
Increased mobility.
Reduced pain levels (including arthritic pain and back pain).
Slowing down of the ageing process.
Improved posture.
Improved sleep.

The second floor had a small workout studio for classes, and a changing area, shower rooms and a chillout room.

Then there is the Empower Programme.
During your first 6 weeks you will meet once a week with a member of staff to discuss your fitness and weight loss goals and to track your progress through these first 6 weeks and beyond.
Within the 6 weeks you will be taught how to:
  •  exercise to deliver optimum results.
  •  maintain a healthy balanced diet.
  • Why a healthy mindset is crucial to achieving your health and fitness goals.
  •  Creating fun and balance through fun and relaxation, which is why you want to be healthy in the first place so you have the energy, health and vitality to do the things you love with the people you love.
By following this step by step programme you can transform your health and fitness and make rapid advances towards your fitness and weight loss goals.

If you are interested in joining the Energie Gym's for ladies you can call Hannah Earnshaw who is the sales lead their contact number is 01923 750336

I was invited by Marcus to come along one evening to demonstrate the Body By Vi programme which he said looked interesting and that members may find useful.  So watch this space as I report back in the next week or so the outcome of my gym challenge party.

Good luck on entering project 10 and wishing you success on the challenge!

Signs That Your Losing Weight

As a nutritionist I have known customers who have lost a little bit of weight, then seem to put weight on.

Why is this?

There are a number of reasons. One being that if you lose body fat you will see the weight going down, and as you gain lean muscle you'll see your way to go up.

Lean muscle actually burns more fat so therefore in the long run you will see inches come off.

So don't be alarmed

Read the following post below

The following post is taken from The Visalus blog site, and explains it very well some signs that you're losing weight.

There are obvious signs that you’re losing weight and there are some more subtle signs that your body is on its’ way to becoming what you’ve been working so hard for.

Here are a few signs that you’re on the right track to accomplishing your weight loss goals:

Man Jogging on Open RoadIncreased Energy

When you’re eating healthy and consuming foods that are properly fueling your body you’re likely to notice a boost in energy that you probably didn’t have before. It might be easier to wake up in the morning or you could just have extra energy in day-to-day tasks that you previously didn’t have. This is a perfect example of how you know you’re on your way to a healthier life, even if the scale doesn’t reflect it.

Improved Mood

When you look good you often feel good. That may seem extremely basic, but it it’s true. Waking up in the morning and seeing yourself looking better than the day before is a truly incredible feeling- yes, you may not say it day to day, but you can likely see it week to week. This increased confidence in your appearance will have a great effect on your overall mood.

Changing Body StructureChanging Body Shape

This one is a bit obvious, but weight loss doesn’t always occur in the areas you would think it does. While fat is likely to come off the stomach, thighs and buttocks initially, keep track- even measurements- so you can see how your overall body is changing. Remember, you may want to lose weight specifically in the waist area but with that weight loss you’re likely to also so weight loss in other areas. In addition, take a look at your old clothes and see how they fit… you might be surprised with what you find out!

Increased Sex Drive

Losing weight improves your blood circulation and stamina, which can directly have an affect on your libido as the pounds start to come off. That, paired with additional self-confidence, is likely to increase your overall sex drive.

As you continue on your journey to weight loss, make sure to look past the scale and see all the ways that The Challenge is improving your life.

Obesity Crises in the UK - Fat Brits!

With all the food scandals currently going on at the moment. It's no wonder that people are taking to cooking from fresh.

Our lives have changed over the last 40 to 50 years.

With the introduction of processed foods, and of convenience foods, it has made it easier to eat on the go. However the consequences of this as you can see are the amount of people who are vastly overweight.

It doesn't actually help with the introduction of technology and computer games. We are now seeing our children become obese and overweight and in active.

This is not a fact to be proud off, that the parents that were born in the 60s and 70s will probably outlive their children

Something just has to be done!

Jamie Oliver tried it for the school children, and although there has been some success and awareness in what we eat and what nutrition is being provided, more can be done.

A revolution is about to start in the UK.

I can just feel it in my bones!

As a nutritionists, many in my industry are being inundated with requests from people asking how they can lose weight and improve their current lifestyle.

We're also seeing a lot more gyms open up with reduced rates. Which is a good thing because this will encourage more people to join and actually become more active

If you're interested in finding out how you can become more healthier in your current lifestyle then don't hesitate to e-mail us at London fit girls club at Gmail.com

We have a great program that is guaranteed to help you lose those pounds and achieve the results you want to achieve, with our help of course.

Good luck on entering project 10 and wishing you success on the challenge!
