Hiking in Reading

Friday 29th of April, the day Prince William married Katherine Middleton.  What an eventful day.  Full of ceremony, music, fashion and joy.  The whole of the UK celebrated in unison for the future King of England and his bride to be.

Well after watching the event, which went on pretty much most of the day. I went for a walk with my partner Glenn, which turned out to be an hour long hike in a little copse near where he lives.

There was a little wood surrounding the fields which we ventured into. There was a lovely nature trail running through these woods which we followed taking in the beauty of nature, the plants and the peace and noises of nature.

Hiking or Rambling as it is also called here in the UK,  is something that is great to burn of those calories, it does not have to be too strenuous as you can take this at your own pace.  It is about walking in natural environments where there are proper trails. Always ensure you are with someone as it is not advisable for you to go out on your own in case of accidents.

There are various terms for Hiking other names include Bushwhacking which specifically refers to difficult walking through dense forest, undergrowth, or bushes, where forward progress requires pushing vegetation aside. In extreme cases of bushwhacking where the vegetation is so dense that human passage is impeded, a machete is used to clear a pathway. Australians use the term bushwalking for both on- and off-trail hiking.

New Zealanders use tramping (particularly for overnight and longer trips), walking or bushwalking. Multi-day hiking in the mountainous regions of India, Nepal, North America, South America, and in the highlands of East Africa is also called trekking; the Dutch refer to trekking also. Hiking a long-distance trail from end-to-end is also referred to as trekking and as thru-hiking in some places.

Literally, anyone can put on a pair of walking shoes or cross trainers along with few necessary gears and equipments and start moving into the woods for a little fresh air—this is called hiking.  The scenery, accessibility and diverse nature of hiking trails make this heart-healthy pastime attractive for people of all ages, fitness levels and income brackets.
Hiking or trekking allows us to maintain our body in good working condition by walking which is really a good exercise. It improves our physical as well as mental health and the list of benefits from hiking and trekking is infinite. Hiking is essentially walking that is considered to be one of the most perfect forms of exercise for your body. You can get a chance to spend some quality time together with the Mother Nature, so it also provides a mental health antidote. Everyone can find trails to suit their physical strengths. And unlike other activities or sports, it is a pursuit that allows people to determine their own limitations.

Many research findings and studies show that hiking is an excellent way to lose extra pounds and improve overall health. To improve overall health, we don’t necessarily need to do heavy and painful workouts, but just a short brisk walk of few minutes can be more than sufficient. According to the American Heart Association, it’s best to walk vigorously for 30 to 60 minutes 3-4 times per week. But even low- to moderate intensity walking can have both short- and long-term benefits. Similarly, According to Walking for Health, people "won’t find a better way to lose weight than walking." The results will be more permanent and pleasurable than any diet or weight loss scheme.  (More info can be found here.. http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/3-24-2006-91812.asp)

So there you go, walking is good for you.

How can you fit more walking into your daily routine.

Here are some great ideas on how you can fit more walking into your daily routine.

Work:

  • Try parking your car a couple of blocks away from work and walk the rest of the way in
  • If you are not too far away, why not walk to work
  • After eating your lunch why not go for a walk around the block
  • If you need to speak to somebody in the office walk over to them instead of phoning them
  • If you take the train/bus get off a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way
  • Don’t take the lift, use the stairs, if your stairs are quite a way up, then build your stamina up slowly by walking up the first 3/4 flights, then then next day climb up an extra flight and soon until you are able to climb comfortably to the top.

With the Kids:

  • Most schools have walking schemes,so why not encourage your children to walk to school or playgroup. They could ride their bikes or push their scooters while you walk.
  • Walk to the park and back with the kids at the weekend.
  • Find the time for one walk each week with each child - make this your special time when the two of you are alone and you can chat / catch up
  • Plan fun exploration walks for the kids - get out and explore your local neighbourhood
  • Make it your mission to plan a new walk for each weekend - look out for local parks, country walks, etc
  • If you drop your children at clubs / parties, don't spend the time driving back and forth, go for a walk instead

With Friends:

  • Team up with a buddy and plan to go walking for fitness once a week with a friend
  • Offer to join your friend when they are walking the dog
  • Rather than meeting your friends for coffee, suggest going for a stroll to the local coffee shop instead.

At Home:

  • Get up early and go for a walk
  • Cancel the paper / milkman and walk to the shop instead
  • If you run out of essentials, walk to the local shop to buy them - don't take the car
  • Walk whilst talking on the phone
  • Set yourself a goal to walk up and down the stairs a certain amount of times per day
  • Use the upstairs bathroom
  • Whilst watching T.V. always get up and walk around during the adverts

Ideas to make walking more enjoyable

  • Walk your dog if you have one, and let him take the lead
  • Plan a route so that you can visit friends/family along the way
  • Stop off half way at the park if you are walking with kids/dogs
  • Arrange to meet a friend half way
  • Take a Walkman with you
  • Treat yourself to walking equipment, this may motivate you to walk more
  • Contact local walking associations and join in
  • Pick different routes each week so that you don’t risk getting bored, you can lookout for country walks or nature trails in your area.

Getting Motivated to Lose Weight and Tone Up

Exercising with Friends can make all the difference!

We are now at the start of Summer officially and the weather here in the UK has been really great for the past week.  The sun seams to bring out energy and vitality in alot of us.

If you want to lose a few pounds, the best way would be to find a buddy to lose the weight with.  Ask around, sometimes others want to lose weight, but don't have an incentive to.  If you have young children now is the time to take them out to the local park, if they have bicycles, let them ride while you jog along.  Or alternately you could also get a bicycle of your own and ride along with them.

If you find going to the gym boring, as many of us do,then find other activities that you enjoy, this could be dancing, yoga, swimming, salsa, martial arts, badminton, tennis etc.  The secret is to do lots of different activities during the week so you do not get bored or stuck in a routine.  Also if you are doing lots of different things your body is burning calories at different rates which will aid weight loss.

Try and do at least 30 minutes of exercise 4 to 5 times a week.  If you cant get to do a straight 30 minute slot, then break it down into three lots of 10 minute slots instead.  Walking is also good, but you need to vary the pace when you are walking, fast, slow, uphill, downhill.

I go out with my friends every Saturday and we meet at a local park and then do a number of different exercises around the park.
