Manage and Lose Type 2 Diabetes Through Weight Loss

  • So, What is Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition where the amount of glucose in your blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly.

Diabetes occurs when the pancreas doesn't produce any insulin or not enough insulin to help glucose enter your body's cells, or where the insulin that is produced does not work properly. Insulin is also produced in the liver.

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar and allows glucose to enter the body's cells. The body uses glucose for energy, we need this energy to move around, play, work and live life in general.  It is vital for life.

When we eat carbohydrates, the body breaks this down into glucose.  However if the body cannot use the glucose properly as fuel, it will build up in the blood.

Having a sensible diet and exercise routine can help to control diabetes and where you have type 2, can improve your sugar levels altogether.  It is advisable to contact your GP or dietician when starting on a weightloss programme to seek advice on what levels of insulin is required and what times of the day.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body’s immune system attacks insulin producing cells and is unable to produce any natural insulin.  People with this type of diabetes need to have insulin injections to control their blood sugar levels.
There is no known way of preventing Type1.  The most effective way of treating this type of diabetes requires the use of insulin.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin properly or not enough.  People with this type of diabetes can control it with diet and exercise, but may have to also take medication in the short term if they are unable to control their diet and exercise regime.

  • Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90%-95% of diabetes cases and is usually associated with older age, obesity and physical inactivity, family history of type 2 diabetes, or a personal history of gestational diabetes.

Most people with this type of diabetes are overweight, or have a bad diet or both.  It is treatable through diet and exercise and watching your blood sugar levels until they return to normal, you will need to seed the advise of a Doctor or dietician.

Other Factors on Diabetes

Sugar levels can also be affected by exercise, stress, climate, time of day and many other factors, making it difficult to judge the amount of insulin needed, which can sometimes lead to blood sugar levels rising too high (going hyper) or dropping too low (going hypo).

What is a Hypo?

Going hypo (or where you blood sugar levels are too low) might happen because the person has either taken too much insulin, not had enough to eat, taken part in unplanned
exercise or drunk alcohol. However, sometimes there is no apparent cause.

Some example signs of a hypo include an (abnormally) pale face, confusion, glazed eyes, lack of concentration, slurring of words, unusual behaviour e.g. anger, sweating, becoming
quiet or withdrawn.

What to do if someone has a Hypo

If this happens the person needs to eat something sweet immediately, either a fizzy drink, fruit juice or chocolate, or a glucose tablet.

Diabetic Meal Plans

There are some really good guidelines for diabetics out there on the internet, and according to how many calories you are asked to follow.

BodybyVi Meal Plan

When using the Bodybyvi meal replacement shakes for weight loss, as a diabetic you need to ensure your blood glucose levels are even throughout the day.

Breakfast:
You can have a 300ml shake for breakfast, add the vi-trim product as this will help to balance your blood sugar levels.

Mid Morning:
Nutra Cookie

Lunch:
fish, chicken, turkey with salad or vegetables, small jacket potatoe

Mid Afternoon: shake

Dinner: Regular meal, just portion size this.

Ensure you drink lots of water, the recommended amount is 2 litre or 8-10 glasses per day.  If you do a workout in between, make sure you increase your water intake and also your carb intake.

Diabetes cases in Britain hit three million

Diabetes cases in Britain hit three million

Diabetes is on the increase especially amongst children.  With todays fast food outlets, processed foods, high in fat, salt and sugars are mainly to blame.

The sad thing is that through simply eating fresh fruits and vegetables and by watching what you are eating, reducing the fat content and amount of salt, and increasing the amount of exercise can help to control diabetes.

Diabetes is something that does concern me, as my mother was diagnosed with this in her early 70's.  Coming from a West Indian background, the foods that we eat are rich in starches which turn to sugar if you do not use the energy or calories up.   Learning how to combine foods and not eat the wrong food types together has helped in controlling diabetes in my mother's case.

My mother was a diabetic diagnosed in her 70's, today at 86, her GP is considering taking her off her medication as her diabetes has been controlled through diet and education of what to eat, what not to eat and swapping bad foods for good food equivalents.

If you are overweight and have Diabetes, then the Vi Shake is great to use to help you to lose weight and stabilise your blood sugar as it is diabetic friendly.  Eating regularly, but healthily will help to reduce weight along with gentle exercise such as walking or riding.

Visalus UK is intent on fighting obesity across the globe, and their product is diabetic friendly, lactose free and gluten free.

This is an article I found interesting in the METRO last week.  Diabetes is also known as the silent killer, as many people do not even know they have it.

The number of Britons suffering from diabetes has soared by a third in six years to 3million, costing the NHS £764million in prescriptions.

It is estimated another 850,000 remain undiagnosed – with 90 per cent suffering from Type 2 diabetes, linked to unhealthy lifestyles.

Doctors authorised 42.5million items costing £764.1million in the last financial year in England, compared with £513.9million in 2005-06.

Can I Drink Visalus Shakes If I Have Diabetes

The information below has been taken from the Visalus Sciences Forum *

Visalus shakes are a good option for someone who is looking for a low fat, low sugar, low carb, and low sodium meal replacement shake. I am attaching a link on healthy eating and diabetes.

The shake and our program provides a low fat, low carb form of eating if the plan is followed. If their doctor says they need more carbs, that is easy to do by drinking a little juice or eating a snack.

The ViSalus Shake is low glycemic (see below).

We have had many people on the shakes that have diabetes, type I or type II.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0003092/

Our glycemic load is very tiny. We have 7 grams of carbs (primarily from fiber...which is a great carb!!!)
(7x40)/100=2.8 glycemic load.

Compared to an apple that has 6.

How Glycemic Load is Calculated:
The formula for calculating glycemic load is simple. Multiply the GI value of a food by the amount of carbohydrate per serving and divide the result by 100.

Example No 1:
Spaghetti has a GI value of 40

A serving (1 cup) contains 52 grams of carbohydrate.

The glycemic load of spaghetti is: (40 X 52) divided by 100 = 20.8 Example No 2 An apple has a GI value of 40 A serving (medium size apple) contains 15 grams of carbohydrate.

The glycemic load of an apple is: (40 X 15) divided by 100 = 6
