Herbalife fitness expert, Samantha Clayton shares her advice on conscious breathing. Breathing is something we do all day every day and most of the time we don't even notice it.

But the way you breathe is important when it comes to relaxation, working out or even singing.

This simple yet effective simple breathing exercise will help you reap multiple benefits from taking good deep breaths.

Working It Does Not Have To Be Hard Work

The challenge of getting down a dress size or two before the christmas parties begin is now or never.  Officially only 3 more weeks until the start of December and the start of the party season.

So what have you been doing to get your self in shape?  Eating sensibly is the only option, but eating sensibly, watching your portion sizes and exercising are the order of the day.

Start out doing a detox to get the body ready for a fully fledged diet if you are going to get in shape for the next three or more weeks.

Your mindset is important and you need to get your head sorted out.  Check out our article on mindset here ==> Mindset

Hate to say it but, if you haven't got the discipline to cut the crap out of your diet and stick to healthy eating, then you will find it hard to lose weight to any degree.

Do you take the elevator or the stairs?  Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator.  And if you do take the stairs, take them two at a time to get the perfect 'bum'.

Bike riding will help shape your 'bum and legs', I personally love to ride outdoors rather than in the gym, but if you do use the gym, try pushing the level up really high and then pumping the revs up, yes it is difficult on the thigs and calves, but just doing this for 10 minutes is much more effective than riding at a low level for a longer period of time.

Circuit Training - only for those who want to lose serious weightloss or shape up quickly in the next three to rouf weeks.  I recently attended a 'military workout' class and a 'weight loss circuit' and they really got my body aching in muscles I never knew I had. Definately got the metabolism running quicker and the sweat was pouring off me.

As with anything you do, make sure you seek advice first from your physician before attempting to do such streneous activities.

If you are overweight, try using the cross training, bike or rowing machine along with weight bearing exercises.  Jogging will not help, and besides is more stressful on your joints at this stage, once the weight comes off, then gently ease into jogging.  If you are a member of a gym, then seek advice from a professional instructor.

It's been proven that most people who are successful in losing weight do so when supported.

So I thought I would share a quick motivational video with you.

Skipping Your Weight Off

Women Click HereDo you know how many calories you burn jumping rope? Just 10 minutes of moderate skipping can lose you approximately 120 calories.

Skipping is a great cardiovascular exercise and can help improve circulation. It can strengthen your muscles and bones an flexibility.

The first thing you’ll need for skipping is a good rope, I prefer one that is made of rope rather than plastic as I find the plastic ropes too light.  It's important that the rope can turn inside the handles and that you can adjust the length of the rope.

If you have never skipped before not to worry it is easy to learn. To get the right length, stand with both feet on the centre of the rope and pull the handles up alongside your body. They should just reach your armpits. When your skipping ensure you have comfortable trainers on, cross trainers with a cushioned sole is best.

Hold the rope handles comfortably in your hands  and bend your elbows, keeping your arms close to your body. Now the art of skipping is using your wrists to turn the rope, not your whole arm. You then need to jump just enough to clear the rope, when you jump imagine your are a spring, keeping the knees soft, not locked will help you absorb the impact better when landing actually if done properly skipping is easier on your knees than jogging.

The best way to get the most out of your program is to alternate skipping with walking and / or jogging. By breaking up the exercise routine will help improve weight loss and calorie burn.  Skipping is also fun when you do this with your kids, kids are so much more flexible and they can show you a trick or two.

Fitness and Weight Loss Go Together

Author Dr Jeremy Sims MB BS MSc MRCGP FRIPH FRSH PGDipHI DipN&H MRNT

If you ever needed evidence that keeping fit / becoming fitter is important for your overall health if you are overweight, then two pieces of research published recently tell it all.
Research No. 1 studying the use of overweight and general fitness as predictors of future death in women, concluded that looking just at fatness as a predictor of mortality risk may very well be misleading, unless cardiovascular fitness is also taken into account. In other words, of course it is important to lose weight to reduce your chances of health problems - but that is not all. It is also vital to ensure fitness of your heart. And the only way to achieve this is through good healthy physical exercise on a regular basis.

In the second research study, this time examining the male population, 9,136 overweight men with no previous history of heart disease, were followed up for at least three years. Individual physical activity and any deaths amongst the group were recorded. The study's results showed that for overweight men the level of physical fitness was directly related to the risk of death from any cause. Even if you were overweight you could greatly reduce your risk of ill-health by improving and maintaining fitness levels.

So, the take home message from these research studies? If you want to maintain your health, physical exercise is just as important as controlling your weight. Indeed, it may be even more essential if you are overweight. Exercise not only aids in helping you to lose and maintain a healthy weight, it also substantially reduces your risk of future disease such as heart disease, osteoarthritis and diabetes, and aids mood and self-esteem.

Why not think about how you can improve your fitness levels over the coming weeks. In the words of a well-known grocery chain, "Every little helps"!
