Getting Back Into Shape - Have Fun With It!

Today's blog post is about having fun on a weight loss program. You shouldn't think of this as a program per se it's a lifestyle change, it's a way of future living.
Our mindset has to be changed because when we mention the word 'diet' we immediately think restrictions.
When in fact
The original meaning of diet is Middle English: from Old French diete (noun), dieter (verb), via Latin from Greek diaita 'a way of life'.

So in actual fact one should not be looking at a diet as restricting one's intake of food but as a way of life!

Now we got the meaning out of the way, let's have some fun with it. Look at your current habits, do you just go to work come home,  eat, sit down in front of the TV then go to bed?

The first thing you have to do is to

change your habits....

Had a hard day at stressful, hard day at work? Go for a long walk before coming home to clear your head, listen to music that will bring positivity into your 'being' or get to the GYM to work out your frustrations there.

Go Shopping and pick up all the wrong snacks?? Yep hands up I have too.  Do you know why? because you are hungry and you just get the wrong taste up in your head when you are walking around the isles.  Instead always make a list and make sure you eat first, before you go shopping, that way you won't impulse buy the wrong foods.

Hands up if your guilty of wanting to go to the GYM, but after you came back home from work to pick up your gym kit you just couldnt make it back out the door....
Try instead, getting yourself into a routine, bring your gym kit with you, and either try a lunch time workout, or go straight after work, don't stop home first...

Personally I find that first thing in the morning is good with me, as I can get my workout  out of the way and it leaves me feeling invigorated!

Motivation! or lack of right...
Make sure you partner up with a few friends or people with a vested interest and see if you can do regular workouts together.  Survey's have shown that people who are successful at losing weight do so with accountability partners.

So that's it my short post on sticking to a programme and getting the most out of it.

Cross Country Bike Ride

Sunday afternoon, we decided to go for a carvery meal.  Now there are alot of calories in a carvery meal approximately 800 to be exact. However, in order to couteract the number of calories about to be eaten, we went on our bikes.

The Carvery is about 2 miles away, so it was a lovely ride there as Sunday was lovely and warm, just a bit windy.

The carvery meal itself was delicious and worth every bit of the 800 calories.  So on the way back home, I decided we should do a detour and go another way home.

Turns out we got lost, and ended up doing a 7 mile round trip home!

Calories lost = 728, so great news, lost nearly all the calories from the carvery meal!

Result!

The great thing is that if you do decide to have a naughty meal, make sure you also have a way to get rid of the calories you are about to eat, this means exercising.

Unfortunately, the only way to lose weight is to use up more calories than you eat!

We all know this, but why do we chose not to follow it.

My challenge to you is to plan your activity each day that will lose you the same amount of calories that you will have eaten for the day!

How Colourful Is Your Diet?

Dieting can be monotonous if we choose it to be.  Why not make it exciting. There are so many good recipes out there that are filled with low fat items, fresh produce and low in calories yet filling and exciting enough to enjoy and fill you up!g

I hate rabbit food!  And there is a mixed conception out there that if you are on a weight loss diet, you have to be eating salads, soups and not much else. Wrooooooooooong...

Basically, if you keep tabs on your portion sizes, type of foods that pass your lips and include activity in your program, and provided that calories 'in' or 'eaten'  is less than calories 'out' or used up, you have a formula for weight loss.

David Heber's book is brilliant.  No more worrying about what type of fruit or vegetable you should eat and how much of.  He even has a simple menu option you can follow.

Because each color category represents different nutrients and antioxidants, Heber suggests one serving from each color. A serving is defined as one cup raw fruits or vegetables or ½ cup cooked.

A week of menus for men and another for women provides suggestions for fitting in all the produce while limiting foods deemed off the menu. Detailed lists of each color group and recommended portion sizes make it easy to create your own menus. Recipes, shopping lists, travel, and dining out tips are included.

David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.N.
Professor Heber is included in the The Best Doctors in America and Who's Who in America.
Professor Heber's expertise has been featured many times in the media, including on NBC, CNN and Discovery Channel.
In addition to writing over 70 peer-reviewed scientific articles and two professional texts, he has also written books for the public: "Natural Remedies for a Healthy Heart," "The Resolution Diet," "What Color is Your Diet?" and his latest book - "The LA Shape Diet."
He directs the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Dietary Supplement Research in Botanicals, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) - funded Clinical Nutrition Research Unit and the NIH Nutrition and Obesity Training Grants at UCLA.
Professor Heber's main research interests are obesity treatment and nutrition for cancer prevention and treatment. He is the Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles*.
Professor Heber holds a B.S. in Chemistry, Magna Cum Laude, UCLA, 1969; M.D. Harvard Medical School, 1973; and Ph.D. in Physiology, University of California, 1978. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Clinical Nutrition by the American Board of Nutrition.
