Top Reasons for Weight Gain

Most of us will put on weight as some point in our lives, it is inevitable. It can be through depression, not feeling good about yourself, greed, lack of will power, lack of exercise, stress, lifestyle, having kids.  Weight gain can also be caused by health conditions and factors that really have nothing to do with your willpower such as hypothyroidism, food sensitivity, organ disease, prescription drug use, anxiety, blood sugar imbalance and essential fatty acid deficiency.

Let's see them:

  • Excess of cortisol It may lead to the Cushing's syndrome which is a disorder that leads to fat accumulates in the face, abdomen and upper back while arms and legs usually remain slender.
Other symptoms of Cushing's syndrome include muscle wasting and weakness, thin skin, poor wound healing, easy bruising, purple marks on the abdomen, menstrual irregularities, high blood pressure, glucose intolerance and hair loss in women.

  • Pharmaceutical drugs Diabetes medication, antidepressants or antipsychotics may alter the function of the body and brain, making it selectively store fat instead of burning it. Moreover, hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives containing estrogen can cause fluid retention and increased appetite.

  • Genetics There are genetic components that do affect your susceptibility to gain weight: offsprings of obese parents are much more likely to become obese than offsprings of lean parents.

  • Food addiction Nowadays, many foods are highly engineered and rich of chemicals: they are producted to be cheap, last long and especially be hyperpalatable.
By making foods taste so good, with excess of salt or sugar, the food manufacturers induce addiction causing a powerful stimulation of the reward centers in the brain.
People lose control over their eating behavior, in the same way as alcohol or drugs users.

  • Insulin spikes Elevates insulin levels make energy selectively get stored in the fat cells instead of being available for use: the best way to lower insulin is to cut back on carbohydrates, which usually leads to an automatic reduction in calorie intake and effortless weight loss.

  • Leptin resistance Leptin is produced by the fat cells and sends signals to the hypothalamus to stop eating when you're full. In obese people leptin doesn't work as it should because for some reason the brain becomes resistant to it.

  • Budget Junk food is often cheaper than real food: think about cheap sodas, candy and processed, packaged junk foods.

  • Rapid fluctuations in blood sugar levels Excess of sugar changes the hormones and biochemistry of the body, contributing to weight gain: eating simple, refined carbohydrates can cause rapid fluctuations in blood sugar levels. This causes insulin resistance, elevated insulin levels, leptin resistance eventually leading to overeating and obesity.

  • Hypothyroidism Thyroid hormone deficiency can decrease metabolism of food, causing appetite loss and modest weight gain.

  • Lack of essential fatty acid Essential fatty acids are good fats that are needed by the body to make hormones and maintain the body's metabolic rate: a deficiency may cause cravings, particularly for fatty foods.

  • Marketing Aggressive marketing to promote junk food is one of the major causes, especially and specifically towards children which aren't old enough to make conscious decisions about what food they should eat.

So now I have highlighed some of the top reasons for weight gain, in most cases, just changing your diet and living a more healthier lifestyle can improve medication levels and illnesses.

Are You Gaining Weight on Your Diet?

All over the world people are following diets to reduce their weight, improve their health or simply to feel better.  However, it is common for dieters to end up gaining weight when following a restricted eating plan, an effect that is disheartening and frustrating.

As a general rule if you consume less calories through food than you are burning in exercise and day to day activities you will lose weight.  However, in practice it is not always that easy as there are numerous factors that can contribute to the success of a diet even if it theoretically puts you into the negative energy balance needed to lose weight.

Many dieters start an eating regime without a complete knowledge of food and the bodies’ requirements which can lead to simple eating mistakes that result in weight gain rather than the desired loss.

Many diets are also overly restrictive and cut out whole food groups or important nutrients.  These types of diets can also lead to weight gain, especially in the long term as they are not maintainable and they can lead to the development of disordered eating habits which alter the way your body functions.

Here are some reasons why your diet may be causing you to gain weight rather than to lose it.

The diet does not result in a negative energy balance.

Eating habits and diets are very personal things and there is no one-size-fits-all solution to weight loss.

Many dieters overestimate the amount of calories they burn during exercise or incidental activity and underestimate the amount they are consuming in certain foods.

This can mean that even if the diet is followed correctly, weight loss may not occur and in fact you may gain a little.

Benefits of Nutritional Shakes

Now I am not ashamed to say I am a Herbalife fan big time. (No, not because of David Beckham!)

Not only do I like their products, I recommend them as part of my nutrition programmes and I use them myself.  Yes I honestly do.

I am constantly being reminded by my clients of the high quality products and ingredients used within them, as they have been known to compare the Herbalife brand with some off the shelf brands.. no names mentioned.

Here is my version of the benefits of having a nutritional meal replacement shake within your current program, even if you are not looking to lose weight.

Weight maintenance
If you are looking to keep your weight at a steady pace, then having one meal replaced by a nutritional shake will help you maintain your calorific intake on a daily basis. Far too often a small snack can turn into the wrong type of fatty or stodgy foods which will only add more calories and fat to your programme rather than helping you to slim down.

I personally use the Herbalife Nutritional Shake Mix for weight maintenance and also use it within my sports nutrition program.  (Did I mention I am going to do a 13 mile half marathon in October?)

Weight Loss
A great way to lose weight is to replace two of your meals with a nutrient and protein rich shake which will have included  much needed vitamins and minerals.  Having a liquid nutritional shake is easier on the digestive system, and puts the nutrients directly back into the blood streams where appropriatel.  Normally it make take a few hours for your food to digest, but with a liquid meal, this aids better indigestion and does not take up as much of your bodies resources.

I lost over 28lbs using Herbalife products over 7 years ago and have not looked back since.

Weight Gain
Believe it or not there are some people who wish to put on weight and who find it very difficult to do so healthily. Having a nutritional shake on top of having three regular meals a day is a great way to put on healthy weight under guidance from a nutritionist or wellness coach.

Sports Nutrition
A while back I completed the London Triathalon with a whole bunch of Herbalife Independent Distributors. We were given training on how to use the Herbalife product range to aid us with our sports nutritional needs in order to compete inthe London Triathalon.  Herbalife have a great range of sports nutritional supplements and isotonic drinks to aid your training needs.  LA Galaxy is currently sponsored by Herbalife and more and more sports are looking to nutritional supplementation.

As a healthy fast food!
If you lead a busy life and are always on the go,then you use the Herbalife Nutritional Shake Mix as a ultimate fast food. Full of vitamins, minerals and filling too, low fat and low calories!

As a pick me up tonic
If you are feeling unwell and are put off your food, having the nutritional shake is ideal to help keep your energy levels up.  Not only are you still getting your vitamins and minerals, but a wholesome nutritional meal.

Now I don't know about you, but there are a whole load of reasons listed above why the Herbalife nutritional shake mix is so flexible and the benefits it can bring to all aspects of your wellbeing is not to be argued. If you want to know more about our products and how to use them, drop me a line at londonfitgirlsclub@gmail.com

If you use Herbalife products, tell us how in the comments box below...
