Why Breakfast Helps Your Metabolism

I talk to so many people about breakfast and why it's important for your body.

I know we all lead busy lives, I get that. Society is so demanding.

But....  Here's the thing.. Your body NEEDS food first thing!

After all, the last time you ate was more than eight hours ago, so you have effectively been fasting.  When we sleep our body takes time to repair itself with the nutrients from the foods we eat. at sleep time your body  It's like a computer in standby mode, everything is conserved  so the body can do its thing!

So when you wake up it's like you've come back 'online' and in order to fire up we need food or fuel.

BREAKing a FAST is what your body does when we eat breakfast in the morning or after a long period of rest.

So here's why you need to eat after a long period of rest:

Diabetes: Skipping breakfast may increase a woman's diabetes risk, according to a study published this month in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Women who ate breakfast an average of zero to six times per week were at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes than women who ate breakfast every day.

Heart Disease: Eating breakfast was associated with a lower incidence of heart disease in men between ages 45 and 82, according to a July study in the journal Circulation. The study also found that skipping breakfast was associated with hypertension, insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar levels.

Memory: A 2005 Journal of the American Dietetic Association review of 47 breakfast-related studies found that eating breakfast is likely to improve cognitive function related to memory and test grades. Translation: Eating breakfast is a smart move!

Weight Loss: In one recent study, people who ate breakfast as their largest meal lost an average of 17.8 pounds over three months. The other participants consumed the same number of total calories per day, but ate most of their calories at dinner, according to the study published in July in the journal Obesity. The large-dinner group only lost an average of 7.3 pounds each over the same time period.

So What should you eat?
You know that eating breakfast jump-starts your metabolism. But did you realize that certain food choices can crank up your fat-burning even more?

The key: eating a breakfast that’s high in Resistant Starch (RS). Found in foods like bananas and oats, Resistant Starch actually signals your body to use fat for energy.

High protein breakfasts such as scrambled eggs on spinach or green smoothies with added protein powder to oats and granola are great.

But I don't like eating first thing?

No problem, try eating a yoghurt instead or a piece of fruit. Then later on when you feel to eat, choose a healthy option.

If you liked what you read and it brought some value to you feel free to share and leave a comment below on your thoughts about breakfast.

If I Have High Blood Pressure Can I Join The Challenge?

Generally speaking you should always consult with your general practitioner before embarking on a weight loss regime, especially if you are overweight or have any medical conditions.

One of the reasons for high blood pressure is being overweight or the lack of exercise.  So technically losing a bit of weight may alleviate some of the problems associated with high blood pressure.

According to the Visalus Sciences Forum....

Generally speaking, while we can't make claims that we can help with blood pressure (as this is  drug claim) we do know that our products may be beneficial for those with high blood pressure.

Our shake and products are low sodium, and one cause of high blood pressure is being overweight.
A slight reduction in weight may help doctors lower the blood pressure medication. Too much sodium, not enough potassium can also impact blood pressure. So we have low sodium, and some potassium in the shake.

SO if you have high blood pressure and  want to lose weight and join us in the challenge, generallly speaking it should be ok, but always consult with your general practitioner first.

To your dieting success!

Here Are Some Tips For Lowering Your Blood Pressure

Got High Blood Pressure? What are the signs?  Well for one if you are having lots of headaches, or feel light headed, or even hear your heart beat in your temple, that is some of the physical signs.  Some people may not have any signs.

When you have had your blood pressure taken it is represented as two numbers, such as 120/80mmHg (one hundred and twenty over eighty millimetres of mercury).
  • The first figure – the systolic blood pressure is a measure of the pressure when your heart muscle is contracted and pumping blood. This is the highest pressure in your blood vessels.
  • The second figure – the diastolic blood pressure – is the pressure between heart beats when your heart is resting and filling with blood. This is the lowest pressure in your blood vessels.
The lower your blood pressure, the better for your health. Doctors recommend that your blood pressure is kept below 140/85

It is important to go get your blood pressure checked regularly at your local Doctor's surgery.  Alternately there are monitors which you can buy such as the  Omron Bp652 7 Series Blood Pressure Wrist Unit or the Omron HEM-650 Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor with APS (Advanced Positioning Sensor)and use these to help measure your blood pressure in between your GP visits.

Getting your blood pressure under control as soon as possible can reduce the  following ailments,
  • cardiovascular disease, such as angina (chest pain caused by reduced blood flow), stroke, heart attack, heart failure or atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat)
  • kidney damage
  • damaged sight
Some of the causes of high blood pressure are
  • lack of exercise
  • poor diet
  • stress
  • being overweight
  • high intake of alcohol
If you believe you have high blood pressure then you can improve this by improving your diet, losing weight or introducing more exercise into your daily routine.  Taking a walk instead of driving the car to the shops, walking the kids to school or even joining a salsa class or do something you enjoy or something you and the family could do together.

Herbalife have a great product called Niteworks which helps to increase the Nitric Oxide production during the night in our bodies while we are asleep. Niteworks has been known to help improve your blood pressure and Nitric Oxide production which in turn will increase blood flow.

Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Let’s be clear about this, it isnot a miracle cure, but this age old recipe has been around for centuries.  Hippocrates, known as the Father of Medicineused this vinegar around 400 B.C. for its health giving qualities.

So What Is Apple Cider Vinegar:
Apple cider vinegar is made from ripe apples that are fermented and then goesthrough a process to get to the final product.  The vinegar contains a host of vitamins, beta-carotene, pectin and vitalminerals such as potassium, phosphorous, sodium, magnesium, calcium, sulphur, chlorine, fluorine, and iron.

Now most of you will think that thesupermarket ‘clear sparkling’ white cider vinegar is the real deal.  The pure vinegar is steamed to get thesparking clear vinegar that is available at the supermarket. This steamingprocess destroys almost all of the health giving nutrients. What it does do isgive the vinegar an excellent eye appeal. Well, sorry to say that its not. Ifyou were to find the ‘real’ beneficial cider vinegar, it is brown in colour, unfiltered or refined, and has a tiny cobweb type substance floating in it,known as ‘Mother’.  This unrefined applecider vinegar is of good quality with all the nutrients and health givingproperties inside.

How Can It Help Ailments, Weight Loss and More:
Pectin can be found in the skin ofapples and in the vinegar is a fibre which helps reduce bad cholesterol andhelps in regulating blood pressure.

The potassium in this vinegar alsohelps in eliminating toxic waste from the body. Great for detoxing!

The beta-carotene helps inrepairing damage to the skin caused by pollution and free radicals, helping tomaintain firmer skin and a youthful appearance.

If you suffer from and  including weak finger nails, hair loss, toothdecay, sinusitis, and what seems like a cold or  permanently running nose, this present adeficiency in potassium. Apple cider vinegar is loaded with potassium.

Apple cider vinegar is good forthose wanting to lose weight. It helps in breaking down fat which helps innatural weight reduction.

Apple cider vinegar contains malic acid which is very helpful in fightingfungal and bacterial infections. Uric acid deposits formed around joints can bepainful.  Malic acid dissolves uric aciddeposits that form around joints, helping relieve joint pains. This dissolveduric acid is gradually eliminated from the body.

It has been found that apple cider vinegar is helpful in ailments such as indigestion, constipation, weak bones, headaches, arthritis, diarrhoea, eczema, high bloodpressure, sore eyes, joint ailments, mild food poisoning, sinusitis,  high cholesterol, hair loss, obesity, chronicfatigue, along with a host of many other ailments.
